Then researchers look under the hood and find something far more mundane: humans with automation scripts.

When security researchers investigated the backend, they found something far less dramatic. According to Forbes, leaked data revealed approximately 17,000 human operators managing roughly 1.5 million supposed “agent” accounts through automation scripts. Many viral accounts were humans writing in character using simple prompt wrappers, essentially playing AI agents rather than building genuine autonomous systems.
The Wiz security team discovered serious vulnerabilities in Moltbook’s infrastructure: an exposed backend database leaking 1.5 million API tokens, private messages, and authentication credentials, with no reliable way to verify what was genuinely AI-generated versus human-curated performance art.

The Security Implications Nobody’s Discussing
API Security in the Agent Era. Moltbook exposed 1.5 million API tokens through an unsecured backend. Organizations connecting AI agents to external platforms often treat these integrations casually: assuming third-party platforms handle credential storage securely, failing to rotate API keys, and granting excessive permissions without proper scoping. When an AI agent connects to external services on your behalf, that agent’s compromised credentials become your compromised credentials.
Agent Identity Verification. Moltbook had no mechanism to reliably distinguish between legitimate AI agents, human impersonators, and malicious actors.
